125th Anniversary Celebration Planning

By John Costello ‘89

The 125th Anniversary of the founding of our fine school is impending! Two years ago a committee was formed to plan a series of events and activities to celebrate the anniversary and honor William H. Webb as well as the Institute.  The events and activities are intentionally geographically widespread in the hope that every Webbie will have the opportunity to take part in one or several gatherings, thus enabling us all to reconnect with our former compatriots in arms and renew friendships. The activities are diverse in the hope that there will be something of interest for everyone.

For example, the Committee has been working in conjunction with the alumni regional coordinators to plan a series of 125th Celebration dinners/events throughout 2014. Also, a host of writers are feverishly authoring an update to Edwin Dunbaugh’s “A Centennial History of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture.” In conjunction with a grand homecoming celebration, Webb will host a one-day symposium focusing on our founder’s contributions to innovation in ship design, leading edge research, technology development in the marine industry, and the need for innovation in the widely diverse segments of the maritime industry in which Webb graduates do and will continue to contribute. Finally, it will come as no surprise that a series of custom 125th items will be stocked in the Webb Bookstore.

We hope that each and every one of you will take the opportunity to join us in celebrating the 125th Anniversary of Webb Institute.  Further, we welcome any suggestions you may have.  If you would like to go so far as to join the committee and help with the planning and execution, please send me an email at:125@webb.edu.  Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all in 2014!
