4/2-3: Spring North Qualifier

By Doug Zangre '13, Captain

The Webb Institute Sailing Team traveled to Ithaca, NY, this past weekend for its first regatta of the season, the Fall Spring Qualifier at Cornell University.  Although racing was initially delayed Saturday morning, the wind on Cayuga Lake grew steadily to 15-20 knots.  James Codega and Mike LaRose sailed with determination in A division, sailing against some of the best college sailors in the district.  Troy “The Bear” Zangle, accompanied by the unshakable Marc Smith, rode his heavy-wind expertise to a strong first day in B division.  In fact, Troy and Marc were among the few boats to safely battle through a sudden 25 knot gust, keeping their boat upright and sailing to the finish.  At the end of day one, Webb Institute was well seated in 4th place out of 14 teams.

Day two proved to be more challenging for Webb, as the competition improved in the lighter breeze.  Don Rickerson hit the water as a crew in B division, and Webb continued to sail with pride and purpose.  With all 28 races completed, Webb Institute finished 8th, but headed home knowing they left it all on the course.  Thank you to all the sailors who made the trip and also to Cornell for a well-managed event.
