4/9-10: OCC 2-on-2 Team Race

By Doug Zangre '13, Captain

Over the weekend, the Webb Institute Sailing Team sailed a two-on-two team race hosted by Ocean County College in Toms River, NJ.  Webb faced several formidable opponents in its first team racing event of the season.  James Codega, Mike LaRose, Marc Smith, and Doug Zangre represented Webb with a respectable final record of 7 wins to 5 losses.

Saturday brought perfect sailing weather to the Toms River Yacht Club.  The wind consistently blew between 8-10 knots and was just shifty enough to keep the sailors focused.  Webb came out of the gate slowly, losing its first few races to more experienced team racing squads such as George Washington University.  However, the team bounced back strongly after lunch to finish the day on a winning streak.  Good starts and sound tactics by both boats propelled Webb to victory in its final three races of the day.

Day two of the event started with a wind delay, but races began once a light but manageable wind developed.  Light wind tactics and boat speed dominated on Sunday, and Webb continued their winning streak despite the frustrating conditions.  The team finished their second and final set of races with an impressive 5-1 record.  The vast improvement of the team throughout the event serves as encouragement and motivation for the team to keep up the hard work.  Thank you to Ocean County College and the Toms River Yacht Club for being excellent hosts.

The Sailing Team heads back to Toms River Yacht Club this weekend for the Leroy Grant Regatta.  GO WEBB!
