9/24: Cornell Qualifier
This weekend, the Webb Institute Sailing Team sailed the MAISA North #1 Qualifier at the Cornell University sailing center on beautiful Cayuga Lake. A steady breeze was hard to find, but the race committee managed to complete nine A and nine B division races. Webb didn’t disappoint in its first important event, finishing 7th out of 16 teams and 3rd among club teams, qualifying for the 2011 MAISA Club Championships.
James Codega and Mike LaRose (having recovered from being hit by a car last season) sailed consistently in A-division against some of the region’s best collegiate sailors. Doug Zangre and Marc Smith sailed stealthily in the light and variable breeze, stunning the competition by placing first and third in the first two B-division races. Later races proved a larger challenge, but Webb found itself well among the regatta’s leaders.
Three races were sailed in each division on day two as the wind was equally unreliable. Dylan “The Felon” Froriep took over as skipper of B-division and sailed competitively. Thanks to the sailors who represented Webb on the road and to the Cornell sailors who made the event possible.
While part of the team was racing up in Ithaca, Webb also hosted our Fall home regatta, the Coho Memorial. Special thanks to Troy Zangle, Roxanne Schacht, Nathan Fast and countless other Webb students for organizing the event and turning it into a success. In our home regatta, Webb finished 3rd out of 7 teams, seceding victory to Cornell University.
