Webb Sailing – Third at CNU 2-on-2 Invitational

CNU 2on2 Race

March 20-21, 2010

By Seth Cooley '10

For the second weekend in a row, Webb Sailing made the trek down to Newport News, Virginia to sail in the CNU 2-on-2 Team Race. In a fit of déjà vu, the weather was absolutely perfect for anything other than sailing—blue skies, temperatures in the mid-seventies, and no breeze! The Race Committee made the wise decision to postpone ashore to the delight of all involved. The day was filled with Frisbee, horseshoes, and generally lounging around until racing was abandoned for the second Saturday in a row.

Saturday night, the Webb team had the pleasure of joining the University of Virginia team at the home of Webb Alumnus Lou Codega, whose daughter Linda sails for UVA. As an alumnus of Webb but a UVA parent, Lou’s interest in the regatta’s results were clearly conflicted, but we were assured that he was in fact committed to rooting for his alma mater… sorry Linda!

The weather on Sunday displayed only slightly more promise the day before. The teams rigged though and short-tacked their ways out of the narrow creek channel out onto the James River. The wind gradually came up to a sailable five knots, only to shut off again just after the second flight. A short postponement ended with the arrival of a new 5-8 knot breeze which lasted the remainder of the day. Teams sailed a single round-robin, facing each team one-on-one, two boats each. Webb suffered tactical and boat-speed issues in the first few races, winning only one of first three but quickly rallied to sail their last four races unbeaten. Final results are below.

Thanks again to the CNU team who hosted the regatta and housed the Webb team, Webb Coach Gene D’Alessandro, and the Codega family for their hospitality.

Webb sailing had a break for a weekend and will sail next at Cornell on April 3-4. As Cornell qualifying event, the team has been putting extra hours in, including an extended Saturday practice in order to be as best prepared as possible.
