Overview

Webb hosted the 2010 Engineers’ Cup this weekend, May 15-16, at the Webb Yacht Club.  The weather was near-ideal on Saturday with breeze and sun, which made up for the lack of wind and early abandonment of racing on Sunday.  Ten races were run in A-Division and nine in B-Division.  The regatta was won by Ocean County with 34 points.  Webb finished up in second place with 47 points.  Queens (CAN) was third with 52 points.  Nathan Fast and Don Rickerson/Sean Murphy were low-points winners of the regatta with just 15 points over the course of 8 B-division races, including 5 firsts and 3 seconds.  Thanks to everyone who made the regatta a success!

Full Report

Sailors arrived on Saturday to breezy conditions for the first day of the 2010 Engineers’ Cup.  The wind continued to build from the north-west before the advent of racing, with gusts over 20 knots.  After some boat-launching issues on the wave-battered beach, the first races were started a bit after 10:00.

The wind was up and down throughout the day, with periods of being fully over-powered as well as times where the wind shut down to about five knots or less. This combined with frequent shifts made racing quite technical.  Adding to the difficulty were the large waves that remained even when the breeze lessened.  Progress upwind was quite labored at times, but the top teams dealt with the tough conditions well.  Racing continued late into the day to take advantage of the conditions.

Day two saw a postponement ashore until a 5 knot northerly filled in.  Boats were sent out and began a race only to have the breeze die once again.  The course was shortened considerably and the race finished.  Boats were sent in for a second postponement ashore.  At 12:30, racing was abandoned as all signs pointed to the wind being gone for good, and the regatta was concluded.

In the end, the regatta was won by Ocean County, Webb finishing second, and Queens third.  Full results can be found below.  Though OCC had a fairly strong hold on first, competition for second place was tight between Queens and Webb with just five points separating the two in the end.

Webb sailors included Seth Cooley and Dave Gross in A-division, Nate Fast, Don Rickerson, Sean Murphy, and Roxy Schacht in B-division.  The entire sailing team stepped up and helped run the regatta quite smoothly, despite trying conditions. Thanks to all who were there!  Thanks, also, to Webb coach Gene D’Alessandro for helping out all weekend and all the teams who attended.  We hope to see you all back next year!

This regatta concludes the 2010 Spring sailing season for Webb and the rest of MAISA.  It also concludes the college sailing careers of our three seniors, Dave Gross, Doug Slocum, and myself.  As for me, I can say that the Webb sailing experience has been a great one and will be extremely missed.  Good luck to the freshmen in the future and I hope that you will all continue to encourage the team’s wonderful growth.  Thank you all for making our last season memorable!
