Fordham/Columbia North Qualifier #1
By Doug Zangre '13, Sailing Team Captain
The team sent six sailors to City Island, NY to race the first qualifying event of the season: Nathan Fast, James Codega, Dylan Froriep, Marc Smith, Mike LaRose, and Doug Zangre. Saturday featured a steady, healthy breeze ranging from 15 to 25 knots with a steep chop, physically challenging conditions for college racing. (It was a good thing Webb had a few pounds on the other teams.) After getting off to a slow start, the team began to string together some top-fleet finishes in both divisions. Webb was in fighting position with some of the best teams in the division including SUNY Maritime, Navy, KP and Cornell.
Sunday presented similarly windy but shiftier conditions in the Bronx and Webb sailed consistently to a 7th place finish out of 15 teams. It is worth pointing out that after 26 races, Webb was less than 20 points behind 4th place Navy but almost 60 points ahead of the 8th place Buffalo. Amongst the club teams at the regatta Webb finished 3rd, qualifying for MAISA Club Championships for the second year in a row. Way to go!
