Charles G. Visconti
You began your professional life in the marine industry after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in 1955.
You served as a Commissioned Engineering Duty Officer in the USNR (1956-1958) and then gained your ship design experience, specializing in cargo handling gear, with the naval architectural firms of J.J. Henry & Co., Inc. and J.J. McMullen & Associates. You joined International Cargo Gear Bureau, Inc. in 1961 where you have held numerous positions. Your progressively increasing responsibilities within ICGB led you to be named President & Chairman in 1970, a title you still hold today.
You have had much involvement within your hometown, including the Planning Board for the Borough of River Edge; the Senior Residence of River Edge, Inc.; and the Pastor’s Special Standing Committee at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, where you have served as a Lector since 1978. You have also authored many technical papers and are a member of SNAME, the US TAG for ISO TC 104, and an Observer for the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association Safely Panel.
Your involvement with your alma mater began in 1974 when you served on the Webb Alumni Association Executive Committee. You later were named a Trustee of Webb Institute in 1980 where you held numerous positions such as Board Vice Chairman; in the post-World War Two years you served the longest term as Chairman of the Board, 1988-2005. In 2005 you were elected Chairman Emeritus, becoming the second person to hold that title. Your guidance and support has been invaluable.
Charles G. Visconti, it is my supreme honor on behalf of Webb Institute to recognize your career of leadership and achievement by conferring upon you the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science, honoris causa.
