New Assistant Professor at Webb in Fall 2011

Webb Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Adrian Onas as assistant professor of naval architecture.  Dr. Onas will begin teaching in the fall 2011.

Dr. Onas earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture, Navigation and Maritime Transport from the Merchant Marine Institute in Constanta, Romania, in 1994; a Master of Science degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of New Orleans in 1998; and a Ph.D. in ocean engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2009.

Before beginning his post-graduate work, Dr. Onas was employed as a maritime deck officer and marine engineer with the Petromin Shipping Company in Constanta.  He was a teaching and research assistant at the University of New Orleans, and has taught on several occasions as an adjunct professor at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Since 1999 he has been working as a naval architect and senior surveyor with Det Norske Veritas (DNV).  His experience with DNV has included convention and regulatory tonnage modeling on behalf of the United States Coast Guard; surveyor’s training in classification production systems and new building surveys, plus an extensive variety of work on marine structures plan approval, design assessment and product certification in accordance with DNV Rules for Classification, Offshore Codes and Statutory Requirements. Over the past several years, he has been increasingly involved with the evaluation of consequence for fatigue and ultimate strength due to hull girder wave induced vibrations.

Dr. Onas’ particular areas of interest include nonlinear ship motion response in stochastic seas; nonlinear time-varying dynamics of ship roll motion; numerical and experimental prediction of nonlinear roll damping, motions and response of multi-hull ships in restricted channels; and hull girder vibration due to wave-induced nonlinear excitation. He has experience in experimental hydrodynamics, and he has been involved with numerical prediction of nonlinear ship motions in waves, using DNV’s non-linear potential flow code, WASIM.

Dr. Onas is married to Dr. Laura Dutu, an internal medicine resident at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan.

Webb looks forward to having Dr. Onas on the faculty, and to welcoming him and his wife to Webb.
