President's Message - July 2013
It’s July and the atmosphere at Webb is exciting, invigorating, refreshing. Not so different than it was 40 years ago when I was a student here on campus. Every day is an adventure, a new challenge. What a great job and a great place to call home!
Following commencement and final exams, as the students head out for their summer destinations, Webb becomes measurably quieter. Perhaps a little too quiet for many of us as we anxiously await arrival of the new academic year, but there remains much to be done in what will be a very short summer. Freshman class activities begin on August 12th. Building & Grounds director John Ferrante and his crew scurry to complete maintenance tasks. These include a new roof over Robinson Model Basin, a new deck for the Dean’s house, and the painting of dorm rooms. The IT department is acquiring laptops and associated software for the freshmen. The Admissions & Student Affairs folks are busy facilitating student grants and loans.
Leadership teams from the upper classes will join us to assist in orientation and participate in leadership training. The freshmen will experience the usual array of training courses and fun events, as they get to know one another and acclimate themselves to the Webb environment. There will be presentations on the Student Organization, the Honor Code and Webb student life, intermingled with fun events including barbeques, parties, and field trips to NYC and New Jersey. Back by popular demand, Dean Emeritus Roger Compton will once again give a short course in free-hand drawing.
We have many exciting events planned for the Fall. On September 6th, preceding the America’s Cup races in San Francisco, alumni and friends of Webb will gather to hear presentations from Halsey Herreshoff and Gary Jobson and enjoy dinner and an evening together. Family weekend will be on September 20-22 and Open House is on October 26. The Alumni Annual Banquet will be in Seattle this year, on the evening of Nov 8th. I look forward to seeing many of you at these events.
