The North Spring Qualifier at Cornell University

By Doug Zangre '13, Sailing Team Captain

On March 31-April 1, the Webb Institute Sailing Team raced at Cornell University for the MAISA North Spring Qualifier.  The team showed up on Saturday to frigid temperatures and little breeze on Cayuga Lake.  There was a lot of waiting around in the cold rain and occasional snow, but 8 A- and B-division races were completed over the weekend.  A-fleet was sailed by James Codega and Mike LaRose and B-fleet by Doug Zangre and Marc Smith.  Webb was competitive and consistent in both divisions and held on to a 6th place finish out of 14 teams.  The team qualified for the Leroy Grant Invitational Regatta, hosted by Christopher Newport University on April 14-15, as did Queen’s University (Canada) and University of Buffalo.  Congratulations to the team for qualifying for the Grant for the second consecutive year.  Thank you Pete Morris for the sandwiches.  Next weekend, Webb will head to Toms River, NJ to compete in a 2-on-2 team race.
