‘Webb Family’ Gathers in San Diego

‘Webb Family’ Gathers in San Diego

Webb alumni, students, family members, and corporate friends in Southern California enjoyed an evening with President and Mrs. Olsen on January 12th at the Bali Hai Restaurant in San Diego. The reception provided an opportunity for alumni to renew friendships; for students and parents to interact with local alumni and some of the major employers in the area; and for President Olsen to get to know more Webb alumni on a personal basis.  There were 45 attendees including the Olsens: 18 alumni, 13 spouses/guests, five students, four parents of students, one prospective student and two corporate representatives. This represented a significant increase over the 29 attendees who participated in last year’s San Diego event.

Following the reception, the group enjoyed a terrific Polynesian dinner buffet, hosted by Webb trustee John Malone ’71 and his wife Amy.  During the reception and dinner, a slide show of campus photos ran continuously, allowing everyone to reminisce over what was familiar and to appreciate campus features that are new or improved.

After dinner, John welcomed everyone in attendance and recognized President and Mrs. Olsen; fellow trustee Jay Carson ’73; Webb’s “most senior” alum, Bill Markey ’35; the Webb students, Michael Klein ’11, Andy Lachtman ’11, Mike Abbruscato ’11, John Fleming ’12, and Matt Graham ’14; prospective Webb student Michael Chen who came from Los Angeles with two family members; and Scott Scaduto and Mike Quadrini of General Atomics Corp.

He then introduced President Olsen, who summarized the “State of the Institute,” noting that while the students are “thriving,” increased financial support from all constituencies of the Webb Family is needed to ensure that the school will be “surviving” long into the future.  He touched on a wide range of topics and fielded questions on Webb’s financial health and fundraising efforts, faculty retirements and new hires, admissions and student retention, and the strong demand for Webb graduates. The event was a resounding success – enjoyable and informative.  All who attended look forward to the next Webb Family gathering in San Diego.
