Student Spotlight: Webb Running Club

The Webb Running Club (WRC) got its start in the spring of 2011, when a group of students, united by a common interest in amateur competitive running, expressed their collective desire to sample the racing scene across Long Island and beyond.  In acknowledgement of the cost of attending events and the potential for recognition and increased school presence, the Administration of Webb Institute bestowed upon the student body a generous annual budget for the pursuit of all things fleet of foot, and thus the Webb Running Club was born.

In short, we run everything from local community fun runs with fewer participants than there are prizes to 10,000-runner plus club-sponsored events. If there’s sweaty glory to be had, the WRC is happy to enter the field!  With approximately 10 regular participants (13% of the student body!), the WRC regularly competes in events of one mile to half-marathon distance.  The 2012 fall running season will be the Club’s largest yet, with students having flown the Webb colors in four races to date and with as many as six more events to come before the year is out.

The past few races have seen some notable performances, with Webb runners placing unpredictably well in their respective age groups despite their predictable lack of preparation.  For the first race of the year, six Webbies completed the gritty Survival Race 5k Mud Run in Riverside, NY. Over the following weekend at The 35th Great Cow Harbor 10k Run, freshman Erin Hub ’16 cleaned house, placing 1st out of 105 in her female 13-19 division while Connor Bennett ’14 took 4th place out of 87 in the male 13-19 division.  The WRC then geared up to race for the third weekend in a row, entering an 8-person team in the 27th Ocean to Sound 50 Mile Relay and placing 10th out of 26 teams in the open male division.

The WRC looks forward to regaling you with tales of gnarly hills, hearty camaraderie, and legendary finishes at future races, including the St. Joseph’s College 5 Mile XC Invitational, the Hauppauge Power of One Family Fun 5k Fun Run, and this year’s ING NYC Marathon (best of luck to Daniel Dwyer ’13 and Justin van Emmerik ’13 come November).

From the Webb Running Club, we hope you take care, run fast, and run well.
