Webb Institute (Enrollment: 81) vs. York College (Enrollment: 7,780+)


The Webb Tennis team opened their 2012 season with a victory last night against York College (Jamaica, Queens) in dramatic fashion!

The match began with wins by Webb’s  #1 Doubles team of Dan Dwyer ’13 / Jon Soja ’13 against a VERY formidable York duo,

and a win from the #2 Doubles team of Sean Doran ’12 / Colin Spillane ’13.

Rookie Ben Rockwell ‘ 15 / and Rachel Skywalker ’14, played a tough match in their #3 Doubles.


With a 2-1 advantage, the singles matches began play.

Rookies Nathan Fast ’14 and Chris Licato ’15, both played well, but fell short in their debuts. #1 singles Sean Doran ’12 battled

A VERY, VERY tough #1 player, and Webb fell behind 2-4, with 3 matches to play, and Webb needing all 3!


#5 singles Colin “Mickey” Spillane, blasted his way to victory with a 7-6, 6-4 win,

earning his second W on the night!

In a marathon 3 set show, #3 singles, recording artist Jon Soja took stage with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win,
battling the cold and dark, settled down for his encore W!

With darkness in full swing, and saved by Sean Doran’s quick thinking to break out glow in the dark tennis balls, Jean Claude Van – Dan Dwyer,

completed the Webb comeback at #2 singles, as he muscled his way to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over the Greek God “Kratos”!

Great win for the team, as we celebrated afterwards with a feast at Popeye’s, passing on the tantalizing Cow Head and Beans!!!!

Next up: Cooper Union Tournament – Sunday – 1pm – U.S. Nat’l Tennis Center!
