Webb Institute is proud to announce Jonathan Roussin, a member of the class of 2016, as the second Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Zeien ‘52 scholar. Dr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Zeien have generously established the “Dr. and Mrs. Alfred M. Zeien ‘52 Student Scholar” fund that enables Webb to provide a full-tuition scholarship and a $2,500 stipend to cover a portion of the student’s room and board expenses.
“Al Zeien’s illustrious career, culminating with his tenure as CEO and Chairman of Gillette, serves as an example to our students of the leadership opportunities available to the enterprising engineer,” stated Webb President Keith Michel. “All of us at Webb are grateful to Al and Joyce Zeien for sponsoring this scholarship, helping to ensure that future generations will receive the same full-tuition scholarship that was awarded to Al during his time at Webb.”
The student to be selected for this scholarship is to be a rising sophomore who will retain the honor of the title of Zeien Scholar throughout his or her Webb career. The student selected displays academic excellence and demonstrates the principles upon which Mr. Webb founded the Institute in manner and deed.
The faculty recommended, and President Michel endorsed, the selection of Jonathan Roussin, due to his outstanding academic record and involvement with student activities at Webb. Jonathan has proven to be an invaluable member of the sailing team, running club, and the Webb jazz band.
In addition, Jonathan has excelled during his winter internships, a program required by Webb Institute, where students gain hands-on experience working in shipyards, aboard ships, and design offices throughout the world. Last winter, he worked at Marinette Marine Corporation as a manufacturing intern where, in addition to other duties, he assisted the ship superintendent of the USS Detroit with compartment close-out procedures. During this year’s winter work, he will be serving as a cadet for SeaRiver Maritime. His current post-graduation plans involve naval architecture work with either a design firm or a shipyard.
”Jonathan is an outstanding student and citizen of Webb. He has achieved Dean’s List status each semester and is a true scholar,” stated Dean Richard Neilson. “The faculty was united in their recommendation of Jonathan for this prestigious award.”
Jonathan is a great ambassador for Webb, and we congratulate him on his selection for this honor. Webb Institute thanks the Zeien family for their continued benevolence to Webb.
