Shipping Magnate, George Economou Headlines Webb Institute’s 2025 Commencement Inspiring Graduates to “Pursue Everything That Scares You”

On Saturday, June 21, Webb Institute proudly celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2025 with a memorable Commencement ceremony held on its picturesque waterfront campus. This year’s keynote speaker was none other than George Economou, the Greek-American shipping magnate, MIT graduate, and one of the most influential figures in global maritime leadership.

His presence alone was a powerful statement – that Webb, the nation’s only full-tuition undergraduate program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, continues to draw attention and respect from the highest levels of the maritime world.

“It is good to feel like being home despite not having studied here,” Economou began, acknowledging the warm and welcoming spirit of Webb.

In a heartfelt and wide-ranging speech, Economou shared his own story – one marked by excellence, resilience, and an unwavering pursuit of purpose. After earning one bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from MIT in just 3.5 years, he applied to 50 jobs in the U.S. and was rejected by all of them.

“I was a foreigner,” he said. “That’s why I want you to know how blessed you are to be here today, graduating from an American institution and living in this country. Americans make up only 4% of the world’s population, yet account for 26% of its GDP.”

His message resonated with Webb’s core values of Excellence, Community, and Opportunity– as he urged graduates to embrace a mindset of growth and integrity.

“Leave your safety net and pursue everything that scares you. Aim high and miss. Don’t aim low and hit. Make certain that your service talent is bigger than your ego. Don’t be afraid to take a step forward. Otherwise, you will remain in the same place. You will stay still, like still water.”

He also addressed the bigger picture – how climate change and artificial intelligence will shape the future of the maritime industry and society at large. These global challenges, he noted, will require ethical leadership, innovation, and courage – traits Webb students are uniquely prepared to carry forward.

Webb Institute President Mark Martecchini reflected on the moment, “George Economou’s story – from Greece to MIT to global maritime leadership – is a testament to what’s possible when passion meets perseverance. His visit reminds us that Webb’s core values are not just ideals; they are living truths our graduates carry into the world.”

Mr. Economou received an honorary doctorate from Webb Institute, an honor awarded to individuals who have achieved distinction through outstanding intellectual or creative achievements, or through exceptional leadership in education, business, or public service. Webb’s honorary doctorate recipients are recognized for their significant contributions to the maritime field and beyond.

The 2025 Commencement celebrated not only academic excellence but the powerful sense of purpose, humility, and camaraderie that define the Webb experience. Each graduate completed an intensive program that includes a dual bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and 8 months of hands-on industry internships.
