Webb Visits Sting and “The Last Ship”
On December 13th, Webb students attended the Broadway musical The Last Ship at the Neil Simon Theatre and had the rare opportunity to meet the cast, including Sting, who not only starred in the musical, but also wrote the music and lyrics. During the talkback with Sting after the show, topics ranged from set design to the state of the shipbuilding industry in England during the time of the story in the play. Read more…
The Alfred M. Zeien Lecture Series
On December 1, 2014, Mr. Marcus Robinson presented the sixteenth program in the Alfred M. Zeien Lecture Series at Webb Institute. The award-winning filmmaker offered a special showing of his highly acclaimed documentary film, “Rebuilding the World Trade Center.”
The film, the result of twelve years work and over 2000 hours of filming from the original vision to the finished product, focused on the workers who constructed the new 1776-foot Freedom Tower and the other buildings that make up the new World Trade Center site. Read more…
Engineering Day 2014
Webb held its first Youth Engineering Day on December 7th. Student, faculty, and staff volunteers invited local elementary school kids to Webb to work on engineering challenges and chemistry experiments.
By 10:00 AM, 60 students and their families arrived for the event. Nolan Conway ’15 gave an excellent lecture about how the engineering process works, using the design of a super-hero as an example. After the lecture, the students formed groups for the paper-tower challenge. The groups were given ten pieces of paper, a strip of masking tape, and ten minutes to construct the tallest tower in the room. The winning tower was over 50 inches tall! The students then broke out into three groups to rotate through the chemical engineering, naval architecture, and aerospace engineering activities. Read more…
Professor Werner Chosen For Symposium
Glen Cove, N.Y. November 4, 2014 – Seventy-seven of the nation’s most innovative, young engineering educators have been selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) sixth (FOEE) symposium. Matthew Werner, the American Bureau of Shipping Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, was selected to represent Webb Institute. The focus of Professor Werner’s work was “Professionalism in Engineering Education.” Read more…
Webb Featured in “Gotham”
Before there was Batman, there was “Gotham.” “Gotham” is an original story about the great DC Comics super-villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told – and Webb Institute is once again starring as the backdrop for Wayne Manor.
Filming took place on campus in March, and the production company has recently returned to shoot additional exterior shots. While filming took place in the student dining room, meals were provided for the campus community in the Alumni Gymnasium. Read more…
