Earlier this month, Webb won big at the International Hydrofoil Society (IHS) Mandles Prize for Hydrofoil Excellence!
Alumni Casey Brown ’16 and Cody Stansky ’16 took First Prize for their senior thesis entitled, “A Fluid Structure Interaction Analysis of Vertical-Lift-Producing Daggerboards.” The thesis analyzes the steady state fluid structure interactions, FSI, of high-performance sailing hydrofoils.
Additionally, Alumni Zachary Backas ’16 received Honorable Mention for his senior thesis entitled, “Parametric Optimization of Kiteboarding Hydrofoil Using Computational Fluid Dynamics.” The objectives of the thesis are (1) to develop a working procedure for parametric optimization in the programs CAESES and Star-CCM+ and (2) to utilize that to improve the performance of a provided base-model kiteboarding hydrofoil through a parametric optimization process.
Professor Adrian Onas served as the Faculty Adviser for both of the winning theses.
According to the IHS, Webb is the first school ever to win two of out of the organizations three prizes in one year.
Way to go Webbies!
Background on this year’s competition:
Eight entries for the 2016 Mandles Prize were received, reflecting a wide range of hydrofoil-related technology. The HIS assembled a panel of judges to review the entries, and determined that this year’s winners were teams from Webb Institute and Cedarville University.
By virtue of applying for the 2016 HIS Mandles Prize, all students and their faculty advisers are now honorary members of the International Hydrofoil Society.

As Webb’s Assistant Director of Development, Joseph will help support the overall operations of Webb’s Alumni Fund, Parent Fund and Parent Alumni Fund. He will also assist with “Campaign for Webb”; a $40 million effort to help insure the college’s programs, infrastructure and financial resources to meet the growing challenges of an expanding marine industry.
When he is not at Webb, Joseph enjoys spending time with his family, loves to cook & BBQ, is active in his church community and continues cheering on the New York Mets. He is very excited to become a part of the Webb Family!
Professor Daidola Gives Presentation at Joint Society Meeting Hosted by SNAME
This past June, Webb’s Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering, Dr. John C. Daidola, P.E., gave a presentation to local marine professional societies in New York City.
Professor Daidola’s presentation, entitled “A Cornucopia of Structural Challenges – Solved, Ongoing, Opportunities for the Future?” was eligible for 1 (PDH) PE continuing education credit, and was presented to members of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), the Eastern Branch of the Institute of Marine Engineers (IMarEST), the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), and the Society of Marine Port Engineers (SMPE).
The presentation addressed a number of subject areas that have been identified as having merit for research and application to address important structural issues, sometimes historically recurring in different scenarios. Ten areas of interest were identified and discussed: IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR), Tanker Structure Behavior during Collisions and Groundings, Hull Stiffness Variation and Vibratory Response, Cold Zone Materials, Rouge Waves, Large Multi-Hull Vessels, Structural Considerations in the Producibility of Vessels, Naval Vessel Classification Rules, Offshore Industry Classification Rules and Reliability-Based Structural Design.

Webb Alumni, Professor Gallagher ‘78 Working to Repower Historic U.S. Coast Guard Sailing Barque
This summer, four Webb Alumni and Webb’s Professor Neil Gallagher are working with BMT Designers & Planners, a subsidiary of BMT Group, to repower the historic U.S. Coast Guard training Barque, Eagle.
Alumna Emily Whitman ’05, project manager and technical lead, is being assisted by Lidia Mouravieff Needham ’11, and Ray Nancoz ’88. John Gallagher ’74 also assisted in BMT Designers & Planners’ booking of the project. Additionally, Neil Gallagher ‘78, Webb’s Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, is assisting on the project by undertaking all of the shafting vibration analysis.
The repowering project involves engineering, design, supply and logistics support to install a new MTU 8V4000 engine, ZF gearbox, propeller, automation system, and other related components.

Class of 2018 Recreates Famous Works of Art
Each year, Professor Richard Harris’s Western Culture II class participates in a great art project that requires them to recreate a painting or illustration. The goal of the project is for the student to learn to look closely at-and really see a work of art, as well as acquire a better sense of the roles of composition and color.
This year, the Class of 2018 recreated famous works by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol.
Upon completion, each student work of art was displayed in the Visconti Reception Room to be viewed during graduation week.

Session 1 of SEA Program Concludes with Epic Boat Race
On Friday June 15, 2016, Session 1 of Webb’s Summer Engineering Academy (SEA) concluded with an epic boat race!
Throughout the two-week program, the SEA campers did a variety of hands-on projects, attended lectures, took a field trip, and designed and built a functioning boat that would be used in the race.
After their boats were constructed, each group lugged them down to Webb’s private beach and set out for the race. Though all competitors gave their best effort, it was the “Codfather” built and raced by Brian, Dylan, and Joseph who took first place with a time of 6:15!
Congratulations to all teams and campers for completing the SEA program!
Other Teams:
Shark Bait: Ariana, Lea, and Patrick
Knugan: Ross, James, and Thomas
Special thanks to our Webbies, Spenser Boyd ‘17, Jocelyn Kleiger ‘19, Christopher (C.J) Schweikert ’17, Andrew Arnold ‘17, and Brandon Louis ’18, for helping out and mentoring our campers!

Webbie Documents Summer Internship in Washington
With summer 2016 in full swing, Webbies are making the most of their time off campus by doing a variety of things. While some are using the summer to take a much needed break before the fall semester begins, others are traveling across the country for internship opportunities.
Vincent “Vinnie” Commisso ‘17, is spending his summer in the Pacific Northwest working at SAFE Boats International (SAFE) in Bremerton, Washington. SAFE is an American-owned aluminum boat manufacturer and leading supplier to military, federal, state and local law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies throughout North America and around the world.
In an effort to document his summer experiences, Vinnie has created a blog entitled, “A Seattle Summer, 2016” where he shares photos, videos, and details about his internship and exploration of Washington.
So far, Vinnie has visited a Navy salvage ship, gone hiking, attended a car show, visited a museum, and even met up with some fellow Webbies.
